tension chair
This chair was my graduation project from HMC, the woodworking school I attended. I wanted to make a chair that appeared like it was balancing itself. The principle of a cable that is only able to apply a pulling force, yet helps in creating a stiff structure was appealing to me.
process
A lot of experimenting went in to creating the shape. At first i played around with different materials and ways to apply force to it. By using suction and a trash bag i was able to create organic shapes that pulled over my original structure. This inspired me to make the seat out of fabric and have it hang inside the legs of the chair. Most of the parts of the chair were Cut out using the CNC router and i uses laminated wood to add strength to the legs. Finally i sewed the fabric and attached it to the legs wich created a comfortable seat.
